Paula Malbec vs Dona Paula Malbec
A tale of Malbec’s with similar names
The Dona Paula Estate in Argentina produce many lovely wines but none cause more confusion for customers than the Dona Paula Malbec.
It is one of the most sought after Malbec in the UK but the confusion arises from the similarities of the names of it’s various Malbec’s. You would think it would be easy to search for Dona Paula Malbec but here are some of the various wines which people search for thinking they are using the correct nomenclature.
Paula Malbec – This is often searched for as people correctly think they are buying a Dona Paula Malbec. This is the entry level Malbec from this winery. It is lighter and an easy drinking style with delicious fruit complexity but much lighter tannins and depth of flavour.
Dona Paula Estate Malbec – This is the wine actually grown at the estate of Dona Paula and is the one most people are searching for when they type their search phrase. It’s more rich than the Paula Malbec and has a heavier bottle, better quality label and is better quality in general. This is not to detract from the previous wine.
Dona Paula Estate Malbec/Syrah – This often gets confused with the previous wine as the labels are almost exactly the same and the name just has Syrah added to it. The addition of the Syrah adds a spice to the wine and gives it a greater intensity in the mouth and firmer tannins. Not that this wine needs any extra oomph!
Dona Paula Seleccion de Bodega Malbec – One of the finest examples of Malbec available. This is considered the finest they make in This Bodega. The complexities and depth of character are remarkable. It is a truly magnificent wine and one that carries a much higher price tag.
There was also another wine called Dona Paula Los Indios Malbec but luckily this has been discontinued in the UK. Imagine the mess having another wine with a similar name would have caused.
Despite the many incorrect orders and the difficulty in searching for the correct red wine the result is worth it. Dona Paula make outstanding Malbec at every price point and Wineman.co.uk is the place to visit to buy any of these wines and all the other wines that this Bodega sells in the UK.
Thankfully their other wines don’t have so much confusion as there is only one Cabernet, one Sauvignon Blanc and one Chardonnay.
