Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015
from Marlborough, New Zealand
Tinpot Hut is the brain child of Fiona and Hamish Turner. Based in the Awatere Valley sub region of Marlborough they produce superb wines from a variety of grapes. The Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is their signature wine.
This sublime Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has distinctive characteristics which make it stand out from the abundance of “Kiwi Fruit Bombs” which are so prevalent in the UK and worldwide market.
The flavours are all about blackcurrant, lemongrass and subtle grapefruit combined with a herbaceous thyme spice. The minerality from the terroir really shows through in the palate and this wine has won countless awards.
Fiona and Hamish are assisted in the production of their lovely wines by Matt Thompson the intergalactic winemaker. Matt is an old friend of Fiona and they have similar views on the best way to express New Zealand’s amazing grapes.
The Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is a particularly good example of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The freshness combines with the racy acidity to produce a NZ white wine that you can enjoy glass after glass.
It pairs wonderfully well with Thai cuisine but is equally gorgeous on it’s own enjoyed with friends. Be careful not to chill it too much or you will miss out on the amazing aromatics and the subtle taste differences.
Tinpot Hut have won many awards and are a multi winner in the sommelier world wine awards where they described the Tinpot Hut Sauvignon Blanc 2015 as “Elegance in a glass”
The characteristics achieved in this lovely Sauvignon Blanc mainly come from the soil and climate. Fiona’s Home Block is situated in a dry and sunny yet cool climate site in Blind River. This area accentuates the fresh, vibrant and aromatic intensity of their wines.
The vineyard adopts sustainable practises and the Turners are committed to the NZ Sustainable Winegrowing NZ Program.
This is apparent in the team effort between the growers and the owners who come together to produce grapes from moderate yields, excellent varietal flavours and employing viticultural techniques.
So the next time you are thinking of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc remember the Tin Pot Hut Sauvignon and you will be a very happy person.
